Mistover’s Educational Weekend with Maryal Barnett, Anders Eriksson, and Renna Van Dooren
From our heated indoor arena we kept the frigid temperatures at bay as our audience and participants gleaned many golden nuggets from our three top notch clinicians. The arena was busy from 9-5 pm with students studying many aspects of horsemanship as it pertains to the training of the dressage horse.
For some it was the first time they have ever seen work in reins from the ground as it pertains to training the dressage horse. For others it was an opportunity to try work in reins for themselves as Anders instructed them on the art of handling the reins, safety pre-cautions, and fitting the equipment as it pertains to the horse’s conformation and re-action to the reins. Anders not only is a master of the art of work in reins but he is a true horseman who within several minutes is able to connect with the horse and have it dancing around the arena and then teach you how to do it as well!!
Maryal gave a very informative lecture on bio-mechanics of the rider which was filled with many diagrams and videos which gave an inside look at the rider’s skeleton and horse’s skeleton and how each lines up with each other and then how it looks at the different gaits. It gave us a whole new perspective on the importance of a correct position as it pertains to optimum movement of the dressage horse. Later in the day we had a live demonstration of the common position faults, how they effect the horse’s movement, and how to correct those mistakes. Maryal was in her element as she taught and discussed the quality of many of the upper level exercises and what the judges are looking for in those movements. Jayne Marino was a great demo-rider having the ability not only to show us the correct way to do the exercises but also some of the common faults you may run into as you move up the levels.
Renna was on hand throughout both days to comment on saddle fit as it pertains to correct movement in the dressage horse. He made adjustments on several saddles to allow for more freedom of the back and to relieve areas of pressure often found behind the withers.
Maryal will be back with us March 5 & 6th and we are hoping to have Anders return at the end of the summer please check our website, www.MistoverLLC.com, for those dates. If you have saddle fitting needs please call Mistover and we can put you in touch with Renna.
Here are some comments from several riders/drivers and auditors.
“What a great chance to see an expert in the field of long reining. This was a live and hands on experience, especially with the long reining.” Liz Hoskinson
“From Ander’s demonstrations and sensitive instruction I made the connection between long reining and classical dressage. This clinic was emblematic of what I have come to expect from Mistover: Compassionate, Top-notch clinicians at a state-of-the-art facility.” James Cassese
“Maryal’s lecture on the bio-mechanics of the rider was super! I am relatively new to the details of dressage and Maryal is so clear, she really helps me understand more.” Donna Dring
“I had the opportunity for hands on experience with long reining. From the ground I gained a perfect visual for what is happening under me when I ride. I had an “aha” moment as I discovered the feel for an effective and correct half-halt. This has brought so much clarity which has easily transferred to my riding.” Dana Fitzpatrick
“What a lively and informative opportunity this was. It was fun and I learned so much in 45 minutes which is going to help me as I step up to Prix St. George.” Barbara Vignogna
“Engaging the horse from the ground has opened up a new way to relate to a horse and learn about myself as a leader in this relationship. The joy of this discovery was overwhelming. Just amazing!! Wagner Denuzzo
“This was fantastic weekend. I came to Mistover to teach, but I have learned so much. Being a part of facilitators with Anders Eriksson and Renna Van Dooren has been a most exciting two days of sharing skills. Much thanks to Mistover Farm and all of the staff for making this possible. Both Anders and Renna are valuable assets to the horse community and especially to the horse. All came away with a better understanding of the horse. I am so fortunate to have been a part of this educational weekend.” Maryal Barnett
“I went to the clinic with my wife. As a non rider I found this weekends clinic interesting and informative. Glad we were able to attend.” Daniel Jones
“Thank you so much for hosting this weekends clinic. I was completely "wowed" from the start listening to and watching Anders Erickssons work with the horses in long lines. He is a true horse whisperer and I was inspired by his insight, knowledge and gentleness with the horses and humans attending the clinic. I hope he will be coming back again. I will be one of the first to sign up with my horses.” Karen Leigh-Jones
Jan. 7, 2011 - Christee and I are all settled in thanks to Sam. Horses had a very good trip thanks to Beacon Hill Horse Transportation Wingdale, NY. I have started to train with Jacqueline Brooks with both Oki (Oostenwind) and Smarty (Balmoral). www.brookhavendressage.com
Mistover is
proud to congratulate our own
Carol Paterno
for her first published article, an ah-ha moment she had about tempo and
speed. One day last fall she was trying to make sense of the fact that
horse people seem to use those words as if they are two different concepts.
"How can that be?" she thought. As a music teacher, she'd always taught
that they are synonymous.

"On the weekend of May 8-9, 2010, a group of dressage trainers gathered at the Mount Holyoke Equestrian Center to participate in the third in a series of USDF pre-certification workshops. While not mandatory, pre-certification prepares candidates for USDF testing and is highly recommended by the United States Dressage Federation. ...." (read more -- click on the link below)

Workshop

At first, I thought the clinic would be way “over my head” as it was an “instructor” workshop. But as I attended the lectures and demonstrations as an auditor, I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t way above my head…I learned a great deal about dressage that I didn’t know and about evaluating a horse. It was both interesting and fun to watch an instructor evaluate and ride a horse they were unfamiliar with, come up with a plan for training, ride the horse in front of the judges and then give an oral presentation of their evaluation.

"I found "A Small Fortune" aka "Penny" thanks to Jayne and Lisa. The day she arrived, I led her around the barn since she didn't understand about crossties. I immediately felt like I had known her my whole life. I may have. She is a ringer (only shorter) for the mare, Fortune, I had as a teenager both in appearance and temperament, hence her name. As with every other horse I have worked with at Mistover, she loves all the love, training and carrots she gets from both staff and other boarders."

“Jack”,
one of Mistover’s newest boarders, went to Wells Valley Farm in the middle
of May for his first “overnight away” schooling show since coming to
Mistover in October 2007. Jen Nagy, Jack’s trainer, showed him fantastically
in two tests, 1st Level, Test #1 and Test #2, where they won 2nd place and
1st place ribbons, respectively. “Jack” is a sweet horse and is known at
Mistover as the horse with the unusual face and quite the loud nicker. He’s
a 16h 2, 12-yo QH/Thoroughbred cross, with a bright white face and chestnut
body. Jen spent the last six months transforming Jack from a “pleasure
horse” to a “fancy dressage horse” (as Maryal Barnett put it in her February
clinic at Mistover).
His proud owner, Kathy Mathew, says
“if it weren’t for Jack’s excellent training program with Jen, and that
“Mistover special touch”, she would have never realized her dream of seeing
her horse participate at this level.
Jen and Jack are headed to Bethlehem,
CT, next month, along with a few of his “friends” from Mistover.
